Snow Chains: Better to Have Them and Not Need Them

If you're heading into alpine areas this winter, snow chains are one of those things you hope you'll never need - but you'll be very glad to have if conditions change. The Mackenzie basin is notorious for sudden changes in temperatures and as the distance between towns is vast, carrying chains is essential.

Snow chains provide the extra grip you need when roads are covered in snow or ice, helping your vehicle maintain traction when tyres alone aren't enough. They can improve steering, braking and overall control in slippery conditions. They definitely can prevent accidents!

Many drivers assume that because they have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, snow chains aren't necessary. While 4WD vehicles are excellent in winter conditions, they can still lose traction on ice and packed snow. And believe it or not, there are different types of snow in the Mackenzie. Some snow is easy to drive through but once its packed down, it becomes slippery and dangerous.

The important thing is to make sure your chains fit your tyres correctly and that you know how to fit them before you need them on the side of a cold road. If you are in Lake Tekapo and suddenly find that chains are required, the Challenge Service Station stocks most standard chain sizes.

A few minutes of preparation can make all the difference when winter weather arrives unexpectedly.
