When your dashboard starts yelling at you, it’s time to listen!

Most warning lights on your dashboard are a bit like children - they can be noisy, demanding and sometimes overreact to the smallest thing. But there are five warning lights you really shouldn’t ignore.

  1. The engine light is your car’s way of saying, “We need to talk.” It looks like the outline of an engine block and usually means your car’s computer has detected an issue with the engine or emission system. If the light just glows continuously then it’s generally safe to drive for a short time, but you should have it checked as soon as practical. If the light is flashing or is red, stop immediately and turn off the engine and do not drive any further. Time to call for backup!

  2. The oil pressure light means your engine is running drier than a Mackenzie nor’wester. It needs lubrication and is loosing oil pressure. Keep driving and your engine will have a major meltdown.

  3. The battery light warns that your vehicle may soon be relying entirely on hope and momentum. If it’s flashing, you still may have a chance but if it’s solid then you ain’t going anywhere.

  4. A brake warning light is never something to put on tomorrow’s to-do list. If it stays lit up like a Xmas tree, it indicates a major safety hazard and it needs attention immediately.

  5. The temperature light means your engine is hotter than a Tekapo summer’s day. You’re overheating and if you don’t cool down, you’ll explode!

If one of these lights comes on, don’t cover it with a piece of tape and hope for the best. Give your mechanic a call before a small problem becomes an expensive adventure.
